Introductions!
Nathan Pizzo here...

Welcome to my 1974 Project website. It should document the process of building the Porsche of my dreams.

The 1978 SC that was recently sold (See photos here)
was the first 911 that I owned, but after driving it for 7 years -- it surely must be replaced.

Motor work will be similar to the work done on this 3.0 Liter:

Simulating how the back end may look... perhaps a ducktail instead of the standard deck lid.

The FOX 17" 9j Fuchs (I was planning on putting on this car (still might have a summer set) with 275's in the rear, and 225 in the front)

Or the current thinking as of 7/29/08:  TURBO TWIST 17" 8s & 9s! (below is an example... but not my wheels... not acquired yet, but in the works...
I'll let you know soon)
Sexy wheel, (yes) but VERY difficult to model in a 3D editor. If I ever get it right, I'll let you know.

It'll have  modern look, but look how fun!

SIMULATION IN 3D:

AND FINALLY ...  IN THE FLESH!

Will GAS prices be reasonable by the time this project is done? See below  (this will move to the bottom after today)

Meanwhile...
Fabrication is filling the gaps...

The fabrication is going well. I had to resolve how to fill a 1.5" gap between the original lid and the Ducktail fiberglass. This part of the project was pretty fun: It required a 3 foot piece of 1.5" x 1/5" aluminum angle trimmed on one side to .25" to fit squarely in the surrounding portion of the opening where the original grill attached. Other items I needed: Torch, two towels, large adjustable wrench, bodywork hammer, tin snips, sanding block, and riveting tool, rivets. The result: a clean solution to a major gap.

See photos area (Body Work) for more pictures.

Fixn' stuff!

I used carbon fiber to repair the duck tail Lid, damaged top left. Also preparing decklid for graph of duck tail topskin... see photos for more (Bodywork)

DUCK TAIL "CUT & PASTE"

Reynolds Freezer Paper worked like a charm. The paper allowed the clamps to do their job, and then peeled back perfectly! It left a smooth surface for a clean finish. I recommend it if you have any carbon fiber repairs to do. Note the light area below is actually a semi-smooth area, that is where the paper was. It peels easy.

Checkin' new parts (old stock, new powder.) Redone by Jeff @ Wheel Techniques - Santa Clara, CA

SAAA-WHEEAAAT!!!

Beautiful coating of semi-metalic silver ceramic coating (almost hyper silver)
I can just imagine these babies on the bottom side of my motor. TWO-IN, TWO-OUT RSR MUFFLER!! Just wait'll they get a load of those pea shooters, taunting onlookers to the rear...

Recently:  Evaluating Mirror shapes: To Aero or not to Aero, that is the question... (see more views in the photos area)

It makes sense to match the mirrors with the wheels (i.e. a more modern look) Some may not agree, and even dislike, but then again, they aren't going to put gas in it, and drive it - I am. So... I guess I like how that looks. I'm going for the Aero mirrors.

and ... earlier.... if you weren't around...

Checking offset, and getting a good look see... (photoshop yellow - no I am not that fast... looks real enough though...)

Setting up Wheels for proper offset, body work: Block sanding ..., and extracting parts and wiring from donor.

<<  YEAH... that is ugly.

The process is tedious, lengthy, hot, exhausting work. It is amazing how long it takes to remove wiring from a shell that has been wrecked. The problem is getting it out in one piece. Some of it I won't need to use, but it's always nice to get what I can out of it, so I can make those decisions later.

This week coming up: I have sourced wheels, wheel spacers (see blog) 2" for rear, 1" for front, lined up all the refinishing equipment I need to get the body to primed and ready condition, sourced rear decklid (ducktail: needs repair), sourced front body work and front oil cooler. Still waiting on Pistons and cylinders, but should arrive sometime soon. Right now trying to balance work, school starting back up, family, and project. So far so good. Tons on my plate, but it feels good... making steady slow progress.

On the other hand ... these just look totally SICK!!!

PREPPED for Etch Primer, finished with Primer:

The final finish: BAM!  Just imagine it with a glossy Yellow backdrop.

The 74 911 RS Formula: (or my formula)

This sports car will be a lean, mean machine...

Here is what I know about it so far

  • 3.0 Liter, CIS, 964 CAMs, 9.3:1 CIS Pistons/cyl
  • All correct upgrades to engine (Carrera tensioners)
  • Suspension upgrades (turbo tie rods - a must)
  • Big Brakes
  • 8j, 11j Fuchs, 17 inch wheels
  • Lightweight body, RS style interior
  • Speed Yellow Porsche color, RS body style but with turbo flares - similar to an RSR IROC

The current status of the project will be posted to the Blog section regularly.
(Updated almost daily)

History sections coming shortly.

IMPORTANT:   Every person who contributes to this project in any way will have due credit in the links section. (now up)

Latest Update:
"What a head case!"

REMEMBER THESE TOASTED LOOKING PUPPIES?

NOTHING LIKE PERFECT NEW HEADS...RECONDITIONED BY:
RON @ IPB AUTOSPORT (http://www.ipb-autosport.com/)

More coming soon...

Interior Shot of floor pan after working to clear away the debris.

The donor car had just 25K on it when wrecked in 1985. That is what the previous owner claims.

This is the actual speedo
that was in that car originally.

We'll see if it works soon.

The car will be going through a body work stage shortly.
Working on a virtual version of my 911...
This allows me to preview a lot of looks before I have to spend any money on parts or paint. Since this model is detailed, I can generate a ton of images that are at different angles and and I can also animate the car and see an exploded view of the parts, etc.
